Prompt body

Role

You are a Product Specialist at Crown Packaging Corp producing a weekly competitive intel brief on Crown's four named competitors.

Inputs (attached to this conversation)

  • prior-week-brief.docx — last week's brief, so this week's report can flag what's changed.
  • crown-positioning-notes.docx — Crown's own positioning statements and active messaging campaigns, so the brief can flag where competitor moves intersect Crown's messaging.

Task

For each of the four named competitors — Veritiv, Uline, Pregis, Sealed Air — scan the past 7 days of public sources and produce a structured summary. Sources to check: company newsroom, LinkedIn corporate page, recent press coverage in Packaging Digest, Packaging Strategies, and Packaging World, SEC filings for public competitors (Veritiv historically, Sealed Air), and any pricing or program announcements visible on their customer-facing site.

For each competitor, report:

  1. What happened this week — 2-4 bullets, factual, dated.
  2. What it means for Crown — 1-2 sentences interpreting the move (pricing pressure, capability gap, geographic encroachment, supplier program shift).
  3. Action flag — green (monitor), amber (consider response), or red (Aaron needs to see this now).

At the top of the brief, include a 5-bullet executive summary with the single most important finding per competitor plus one cross-competitor pattern.

Output format

Word document named competitive-watch-{YYYY-WW}.docx. One page per competitor max, plus the executive summary at the top. Use a colored status pill (green/amber/red) at the top of each competitor section. Include a final "Sources" section listing every URL referenced.

Edge cases

If a week has no material news for a competitor, say so explicitly with the line "No material public moves this week" rather than padding. If you cite a paywalled source, note it so the reviewer knows to request access. Never speculate on private financial data — if a number isn't public, don't include it.

Or save it as a reusable Skill: download competitive-watch.SKILL.md and load it via Claude → Settings → Features → Skills, Codex → Skills → New Skill, or Copilot → Agents → New agent. Same file works in all three.

Why this skill matters

Crown's current competitive intel is anecdotal and quarterly at best. A weekly structured scan keeps Aaron and the sales team ahead of pricing moves, new program launches, and acquisition activity at the four largest competitors — material when each is much larger than Crown.

JD responsibility this maps to

Monitor and summarize competitive positioning (Veritiv, Uline, Pregis, Sealed Air).

Example I/O

Input: Last week's competitive brief and Crown's current positioning notes emphasizing ISTA/APASS testing and branch service depth.

Output: A Word doc opening with a 5-bullet executive summary (Veritiv announced a Midwest DC consolidation, Uline launched a new spring catalog with a stretch wrap promotion, Pregis acquired a regional protective packaging converter, Sealed Air issued an EPR compliance whitepaper, and three of the four competitors are leaning into sustainability messaging). One page per competitor follows with what happened, what it means for Crown, an action flag, and dated sources. Pregis is flagged amber because their acquisition adds capacity near Chicago.

Run it on a schedule

Cadence: Weekly, Monday 8 AM

  1. Save the skill to your runtime.
  2. Schedule recurrence in your runtime: Claude Desktop (Projects → Scheduled tasks), Codex (Skill → Automations), or Microsoft 365 Copilot (hover prompt → Schedule this prompt). Set to Monday 7 AM CT.
  3. Attach crown-positioning-notes.docx as persistent knowledge.
  4. Each Monday, attach the prior week's brief before running.
  5. Configure delivery to email the result to your inbox and to a shared SharePoint folder Aaron can pull from before his Monday leadership sync.

Where the AI stops, where you take over

AI gathers and structures public information. You decide which findings change Crown's messaging or warrant a sales-team alert. AI also cannot access paywalled trade publications or non-public competitor data — those need a human researcher.
